Small Kitchen, Smart Idea

"Designed by Kristin Laass and Norman Ebelt from Germany, this clever project is called “Small Type” and it has the wonderful and extremely practical ability of fitting in almost any interior, no matter how tiny. Measuring only one square meter when closed, this compact kitchen serves as a table, a refrigerator, an oven, a sink and a storage space. In fact, we dare you check out the photos and tell us if there is anything missing that you would otherwise find in a common kitchen. This design is not only practical, but also looks amazing. It could easily be complemented by a simple set of chairs  in order to create a cozy work area.  This product was showcased at the DMY International Design Festival Berlin 2010 and it is one of the six small kitchens presented by students. We salute these type of small apartment ideas, especially nowadays, where the need for space seems to be crucial."

Library Interior Design Speaks of Serenity

Serenity

The key ingredient in all library interior design is serenity. An area that is conducive to studying and reading should be the first and foremost consideration in library interior design. Comfort is a consideration as well, but not the main emphasis. You don't want to make someone so comfortable that they want to camp out in library and say, take a nap. Because if they are too comfortable, they might be tempted to fall asleep. Unfortunately, sleepy patrons tend to frequent libraries much too often. Bright color schemes and good lighting will help eliminate a few of the more exhausted patrons. In general, however, the focus in Library interior design is on the gentle atmosphere.

Key Elements of Library Design

The first step when designing a library interior will be for the designer to speak to the staff in order to determine the needs of the library. They need to learn if there are any specific elements that must taken into consideration. For instance, is it a study library, a reading library, a children's library or a combination? The designer must become familiar with the needs and wants of the client before launching into a design project. It will be advisable to research the history of the library, the people flow and percentage of ethnic groups.

Library interior designers, as with all designers nowadays, are required to be sure that every design they execute is handicap accessible. Color scheme and layout will be next on the list of elements to be devised. After these have been chosen, then the designer moves to the selection of furniture, fabric, carpet, lighting and accessory manufacturers. The main furniture and accessory components in library interior design will include moveable shelving, reading tables, case goods, computer furniture, book stacks, seating, four-post shelving and book detection systems.

If a certain atmosphere is to be interwoven with the library interior design, then the colors, case goods, carpeting, lighting and some of the furniture will need to be incorporated into the design of the library interior. Of course, if the library design and architecture interior design you are creating is in a home, the overall concept will be totally different than a public or a corporate library. It is immensely easier for any interior designer to be able to design a library interior from scratch with a new and empty structure than to refurbish an existing one. However, a highly-skilled and talented interior designer will find library interior design stimulating no matter how that project comes about.

Color Harmony For Rooms - Pale Pink in Interior Design Gives Heavy Architecture a Delicate Elegance

There are certain hues that very often trigger totally opposite responses. One of these is a delicate, pale pink. Some perceive the color as soft and sensuous, others as weak and boring. In interior design, this hue is often only allowed to reside in the bedroom.

However, there are some architects and interior designers who realize the potential of this delicate hue. A good example of this in my home town, in the Alte-Pinakothek-Museum in Munich. It has a very long corridor-like flight of steps leading up to the next floor. The passage is very narrow, extremely high, totally out of proportion and windowless. If it had been painted in white, this long, arched passage would have been daunting to use. However, the architect responsible for the restoration of this old building cleverly had the passage painted with a very delicate, slightly grayed pink. Even the steps are made of marble in this hue. The result is most encouraging. You almost feel as though you are being carried up the steps. The color scheme has totally counteracted the oppressive feeling.

By using this delicate color, the architect understood how to make the heavy architecture look far lighter by applying an opposite form of energy. By the way, in a room where machines make considerable noise, a delicate shade of pink can help to give the impression that it is quieter than reality. This is actually a very Eastern way of designing: adding counteracting energies to create balance: yin with yang, heaviness with lightness, fluidity with solidity.

The tendency to give a color a one-sided attribute can prevent it being used to its advantage. Even a delicate color can look very powerful depending on the task, on contrasts and on the environment. When we dislike a color, we concentrate on its negative aspects. The color psychologist, Dr. Heinrich Frieling, notes that those who reject a pale pink do not want to appear sensitive or sentimental. However, those who appreciate this hue are often extremely intuitive and subtle in their perception. You can use a pale pink for your clothings too. Just as it softened the tough, sturdy architecture, it will remind you to soften up now and again when you are facing tough situations.

Cheap Airfare - An Update!

Remember when I wrote about trying to find cheap airfare? Well, turns out Tuesday might be the day to buy.  First, I discovered Southwest offers specials to/from a different city each Tuesday.  So, check out Southwest on Tuesday's and you might get a deal!

On top of that, flights are cheaper on Tuesdays compared to a weekend day, but I also noticed the flights were maybe a dollar or two more on Wednesday.

So, don't worry about setting reminders to buy your flights at 3 pm on Tuesday, but do remember to snag them during the middle of the week for the best price!

Interior Design Knows No Boundaries

Interior design concepts are infinite. If you can visualize it, you can make it happen. With just two coats of new paint, a Persian rug, or furniture rearrangement, many homes can be magnificently transformed; however, other homes may require a complete architecture interior design. No matter how much you want to do, an expert interior designer will arrive with all the required tools.

Simple, clean designs are the hallmark of modern interior design. They combine intense lines and muted colors with basic white and stainless steel. Hanging light fixtures that emit dim light are typically used. Items are discretely hidden away in secret storage bins that blend in with the interior. The furniture of choice can be changed, shifted, bent, and reattached to suit a variety of functions. Attractive to persons who adore modern design are windows that are large and rooms reminiscent of cityscapes. While some people may find it to be too sterile, others like its fresh and crisp design.

Architecture interior design changes with the times. A separate wing for the bedrooms, open floor plans for families to interact, and generally a better usage of space are what consumers are searching for in homes right now. Bathroom design is trending to a home spa ambiance with such amenities as dual-head shower stalls, double vanities, and whirlpools and/or saunas. Meanwhile, the newest designs for kitchens provide a fully working nook or a breakfast bar. Wild and bold colors are paired with big windows and high ceilings in modern living rooms. More creative designs will continue to be in our future.

Environmental, sustainable design stays very trendy, thanks to client demand, while architects seek out methods to not merely mix more recycled, environmentally friendly building materials into their creations, but also incorporate indoor-outdoor aspects to produce a more pleasurable environment. Innovative designs include features using indoor water, plant-life, natural lighting, and organic building materials, such as wood and stone. A popular theme is to make homes that are both visually appealing and very functional. Secret storage units, control panels, built-in shelves, and logical space usage are some of the interior design ideas to be aware of.

To have a career in architecture interior design, you have to finish a thorough program of schooling centering on architecture, structural systems design, cooling and heating systems, safety principles, sustainable expansion, specialized standards, and interior design services. There are many attitudes regarding interior design, some love classic beauty whereas others prefer the more edgy modern trend. Whatever their taste, a good architect interior designer has the knowledge and desire to find a way to create a space that pleases any client.

5 External Climatic Factors That Affect an Interior Design Project

Dear friends, the emergence of architecture in human society
has taken a wide and distinct role in itself. Starting from
early eras where man used to live in caves, we have seen a
remarkable growth in architecture and allied fields, which
includes landscape and interior design

The recent being the use of computers and "Computer Aided Design"
in architecture, which allows a kind of perfection in design
and execution process of any building and its interiors.

In spite of all the technological advances, the primary function
of any building structure remains the same, protection from
outside environment and natural calamities.

Starting from a place to "protect yourself' from nature, interior
design has become a "status symbol". Today's interior spaces have
a two way channel, first and the obvious one is the function and
second one is aesthetical, which is a little complex one.

It is quite obvious that the interior design of a space is directly
related to the function of the space. This means that two spaces
like a home and an office have two well defined functions, hence
it will reflect in every aspect of the interior design solution.

But apart from the there is one more important factor that
will affect each and every aspect of the final design solution,
and that's the geographical location of the architectural structure.

A hotel building at seashore and the other one at a hill station
will have a completely different sets of problems to deal with.
Lets see in a short way what are the external factors that can
affect an interior design solution

1) Amount of direct sunlight.

Locations on the far northern or southern hemisphere receive less
amount of sunlight than those at the equator. That's why here the
building with more use of plane glass are used. Also artificial
lighting is given much importance.

2) External temperature.

External temperature directly affects the comfort level of internal
spaces. Since external walls act as a "buffer" between internal
and external climate, it is necessary to use the right construction
material for walls. Depending upon the wall material the internal
finishes also have limitations. This is especially true for
structure that face extreme climatic ups and downs, such as
locations in the gulf countries.

Hence selecting materials that can sustain heavy climatic changes
on a daily scale is challenging.

3) Humidity and Rainfall.

Because of the salty nature of air around coastal areas extra care
is taken for building construction materials, which can directly
affect the entire budget of the project.

4)Wind Direction.

Wind direction and wind speed also has direct affect on the interiors.
Heavy winds exert a load on the external walls of the structure,
thus affecting the construction technology.

5)Land Structure and Topography.

Land structure is the nature of land on which the structure stands.
Various types of land structures include rock solid, marshy land,
etc...Topography of land is classified as plane or a site with slope.
If the site of the structure is on a hill slope, extra precautions
are taken to allow the natural flow of rainwater that the structure
might block. Depending upon the quality of land surface the construction
technology will change.

As far as interiors are concerned a well planned structure with
properly thought spaces is a must because internally the spaces
get divided into various floors.

From the above short discussion it can be said that external factors
and environment greatly affect the way structures are built and thus
directly affecting the interior qualities of the structure.

Technological advancements have allowed us to artificially control
the internal environment of a building irrespective of what's
happening outside. But a carefully studied and well planned
architectural space can easily cut the extra cost of air conditioning
and other ventilation services.

I hope this article was informative to everyone.

Let's Chip It

Currently, I am laying on the floor in our office, browsing Pinterest, while Jon finishes his taxes for the year.  Jon doing his taxes = a lot of talking to himself.  It's kind of funny to listen to the conversations he has with himself.  I also have conversations with myself, but I usually keep them in my head.  Sweet Jon just says it right out loud.  If I didn't know him and love him, I might think he was crazy.

Anyways, on to more exciting things, like Pinterest and a new color tool from Sherwin-Williams.  If you follow me on Pinterest, you might have noticed I've been pinning a few "chipped" photos.  Chip It is a bookmarklet you add to your tool bar, similar to the Pinterest "Pin It" button.  Whenever you see an inspiring, colorful photo on the web, click on the Chip It! button and roll over the image.  Voila! You instantly have a color palette using Sherwin-Williams' paint colors. Not only is it fun and addictive, but it's extremely helpful as I decide what colors to paint the office, guest bedrooms, and even our bedroom.  If you sync it up with your Facebook account, you can save your chip cards and easily pin them.  Here are few of my favorite chip cards:

I love that I can find a color palette now for anything online, whether it's an inspiring photo of something in nature, jewelry, or an actual room.  Check out Chip It and download the bookmarklet.  I hope you all have as much fun as I do chipping!!

My Love/Hate Relationship with WestElm

Dear WestElm,

I love you, but I hate you.  You drive me crazy, you know that? I find things I love on your site for a decent price and then you tell me they are backordered until September?!? That's just mean. Do you think I have the patience to wait until September? I don't! WestElm, I'm over you for now! Consider us broken up until you get it together and get more things in stock.

Love,
Kim

PS - I did manage to get order one thing that wasn't backordered until September - a new shower curtain!! I went with the gray stripes.  Luckily, it was only backordered until May 14th!

Cheap Airfare?

I'm testing out a theory that I've read stating airline tickets are cheapest on Tuesdays at 3 pm.  I just set a calendar alert to check this out on Tuesday.  I've also heard they are cheaper Wednesday nights, so I'll be checking that out as well.  I'll report back on my findings.

We're flying up to Chicago one weekend in June to visit Jon's family, and currently, I've priced out tickets on Southwest at $165 one-way, for one person.  Let's see if those go down at all!

The cheap girl inside of me wants to get our tickets for less than $600, after taxes, etc. Also, I'm not loyal to Southwest at all, but so far, they've been the cheapest.  And they have no baggage fee.  I recently discovered there is a Crate and Barrel outlet in the next town over from where we will be saying, and needless to say, I'm going to need a those two bags, plus whatever Jon can claim to fly free.

Anyone else out there discovered the secret to cheaper airfare? Do share!!
